About WuXing--Five Elements

The Five Elements: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Intention

Discover the meaning of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—and find the natural stone that reflects what you want to carry with you.

What Are the Five Elements?

The Five Elements, known in Chinese as Wu Xing (五行)—roughly pronounced woo-sheeng—are an important framework in traditional Chinese thought.

Although they are commonly called "elements" in English, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water are better understood as five dynamic phases. They describe different patterns of movement, transformation, and relationship found throughout nature and human life.

Rather than existing separately, the Five Elements continually influence one another.

In the traditional generating cycle, each phase supports the next:

Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood

A second cycle, sometimes translated as the controlling or regulating cycle, describes how each phase keeps another from becoming excessive.

Together, these cycles offered a way of thinking about change, connection, and balance. Over centuries, Five Element ideas influenced Chinese cosmology, philosophy, medicine, calendars, aesthetics, and other cultural traditions.

Meet the Five Elements

Wood 木

Traditional associations: Spring · East · Green & Blue-green Pattern: Growth, expansion, renewal

Wood can be seen in a seed becoming a tree, a branch reaching toward the light, or a new idea beginning to take shape. In our collection, Wood represents the courage to grow, create, and begin again.

Our curated stones: Jade · Green Aventurine · Malachite Wear as a reminder of: Growth, creativity, hope, and new beginnings

Fire 火

Traditional associations: Summer · South · Red Pattern: Warmth, rising movement, radiance

Fire brings light, warmth, and visible transformation. It represents movement at its most active and expressive. In our collection, Fire is for moments that call for confidence, enthusiasm, and forward momentum.

Our curated stones: Carnelian · Red Jasper · Sunstone Wear as a reminder of: Passion, confidence, motivation, and vitality

Earth 土

Traditional associations: Center · Yellow & Ochre · Seasonal transitions Pattern: Support, nourishment, stability

Earth receives, holds, and supports. Within Five Element traditions, it is often connected with the center and with the transitions that bring one season into another. In our collection, Earth represents steadiness—the ability to remain grounded while life continues to change.

Our curated stones: Citrine · Tiger's Eye · Smoky Quartz Wear as a reminder of: Stability, security, abundance, and grounding

Metal 金

Traditional associations: Autumn · West · White Pattern: Gathering, structure, refinement

Metal is associated with autumn, when nature draws inward and separates what will be kept from what will be released. In our collection, Metal represents clarity, discernment, and the strength of a well-defined direction.

Our curated stones: Clear Quartz · Moonstone · Rutilated Quartz Wear as a reminder of: Clarity, focus, refinement, and intention

Water 水

Traditional associations: Winter · North · Black & Dark tones Pattern: Flow, descent, storage, stillness

Water adapts to its surroundings while continuing on its path. It may appear gentle and quiet, yet it can shape landscapes over time. In our collection, Water represents reflection, adaptability, and trust in your own direction.

Our curated stones: Aquamarine · Blue Lace Agate · Black Obsidian Wear as a reminder of: Calm, intuition, reflection, and inner wisdom

An Important Note About the Stones

Traditional Wu Xing philosophy did not establish one universal historical chart assigning specific crystals to each element.

The stone pairings in our collection are a contemporary interpretation, thoughtfully curated through:

  • traditional Five Element colors and natural imagery;
  • the appearance and material character of each stone;
  • contemporary symbolic meanings associated with crystals and gemstones;
  • the intentions people may wish to express through jewelry.

This distinction matters to us. We want to share Chinese cultural ideas with respect while creating pieces that feel meaningful in modern life.

Do You Have One Personal Element?

Some Chinese metaphysical traditions interpret elemental patterns through a person's complete birth information, including the date and time of birth. A birth year alone provides only a simplified association—it does not necessarily define one permanent "personal element," and different traditional systems may use different methods of interpretation.

Our collection is therefore not designed to label you. You do not need a birth chart to choose a piece. Instead, begin with one of three questions:

What are you drawn to?

Sometimes a color, texture, or stone simply captures your attention.

What do you want to express?

Choose an element that reflects the quality you want to carry into your day—growth, confidence, steadiness, clarity, or reflection.

What feels meaningful now?

The piece you choose today does not have to represent you forever. Like the Five Elements themselves, your needs and intentions may change with time.

Find What You Want to Carry

Choose the element that reflects your present chapter:

🌿 Wood — for growth 🔥 Fire — for momentum 🌍 Earth — for steadiness ⚪ Metal — for clarity 💧 Water — for reflection

Each piece is designed to bring ancient symbolism into a form you can wear every day—not as a rule that defines you, but as a personal reminder of what matters to you.
