Wu Xing – The Five Elements Collection

Before yin and yang, there was movement. Before movement, there were five phases: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water.

The Wu Xing (五行), often translated as “Five Elements” or “Five Phases,” is not a theory of matter — it is a theory of change. Developed over two thousand years ago in classical Chinese philosophy, it describes how energy transforms, flows, blocks, and balances.

Unlike Western elements (earth, air, fire, water), Wu Xing focuses on relationships and seasons:

  • Wood  – growth, flexibility, patience. The energy of spring and new direction.
  • Fire – warmth, action, expression. The energy of summer and outward movement.
  • Earth – stability, containment, boundaries. The energy of late summer and the center.
  • Metal – clarity, letting go, precision. The energy of autumn and harvest.
  • Water – depth, stillness, intuition. The energy of winter and inner knowing.

In traditional practice, wearing a metal that corresponds to one’s missing or excess element was believed to restore flow — not through belief alone, but through prolonged, quiet exposure. A wooden bracelet for the rigid mind. A water stone for the overactive fire.
