This hanging amulet features a set of five or six traditional Chinese bronze coins, paired with a small brass gourd and braided red-and-gold cord. Unlike a bracelet or necklace, this piece is designed to be hung — at doorways, thresholds, or any passage where energy passes from one space to another.
In classical Wu Xing practice, the Metal Element governs clarity, boundaries, and the ability to cut through confusion. Bronze — an alloy of copper and tin — has been used for over three thousand years in East Asia not just as currency, but as a material of protection. Coins were cast with imperial seals, carrying the authority of the state; but in folk practice, what mattered more was the metal itself: heavy, clear-toned, and believed to hold intent in a way softer materials could not.
The gourd (葫芦) is a complementary symbol. In traditional households, it was hung near doors to "absorb" stagnant or disruptive energy before it could enter living spaces. The red and gold cord is not decorative — red is historically associated with visible luck, while gold echoes the Metal Element's signature.
This piece is typically placed:
- Above or near a front door
- Between two facing doors ("door-to-door" configurations, which traditional practice considers energetically unfavorable)
- Below a threshold or under a doormat
It does not "fight" energy. It clarifies the boundary — a quiet reminder that what is yours is yours, and what is not does not need to enter.
Note: Each coin is unpolished vintage-style brass. Variations in tone and texture are intentional and reflect the material's age.
